Caffeine’s Strength Boost Comes From the Brain, Not Bigger Muscles

A new randomized controlled trial published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism reveals that caffeine enhances strength performance through neural mechanisms rather than muscle tissue growth. Resistance-trained men who consumed 4 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight—approximately 60 minutes before training—demonstrated significant increases in 1-rep max strength and power output, with particularly pronounced effects in lower-body exercises like the back squat.

The mechanism behind this enhancement is distinctly neurological. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the central nervous system, increasing excitability and improving motor unit recruitment. This acute neural effect translates to improved bar velocity and power across varying intensities, from 25% to 90% of an individual’s maximum lifting capacity. Importantly, these gains represent an immediate performance advantage rather than a long-term training adaptation that builds muscle mass.
