In contrast, only 33 percent of maternal deaths occur during the early postpartum period (0-6 weeks), and 20 percent during pregnancy itself.
This distribution underscores that the late postpartum period represents the highest-risk window for maternal mortality, despite receiving the least clinical attention. The analysis, conducted by Pennsylvania’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee across 2018-2020, challenges the adequacy of conventional postpartum care frameworks established decades ago. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists acknowledges that current protocols fail to address ongoing medical risks women face in the months following delivery, particularly cardiovascular and mental health complications.
