A comprehensive data science analysis of Ghana’s 2022 health survey reveals striking statistical findings: diarrheal episodes demonstrate 95% predictive importance for child wasting risk among children aged 6-23 months. Researchers evaluated 1,847 children using machine learning algorithms to identify factors contributing to acute malnutrition during the critical complementary feeding window.

This dominant association reflects the well-established bidirectional relationship between infectious diseases and malnutrition—diarrhea compromises nutrient absorption while malnutrition weakens immune function. The World Health Organization confirms diarrheal diseases as the second leading cause of death in children under five globally. These machine learning-derived insights underscore the urgent need for integrated interventions addressing both infection control and nutritional support in vulnerable populations.
