Independent laboratory analyses reveal a persistent quality control problem in the fish oil supplement market: approximately 40–50% of commercial products exceed voluntary oxidation safety limits. These oxidized supplements result from exposure to heat, light, and oxygen during manufacturing and storage, degrading omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
However, the clinical significance remains unclear. A 2012 randomized controlled trial found that healthy adults who consumed heavily oxidized fish oil (TOTOX value of 45) experienced no measurable increase in inflammation, oxidative stress, or adverse vascular changes over a seven-week period. Yet long-term human safety data are limited, and the European Food Safety Authority has not established health-based safety thresholds for oxidized fish oil consumption.
