A new neuroimaging analysis from Drug and Alcohol Dependence (2025) reveals striking inter-individual variation in how alcohol affects brain organization at legal alcohol limits. Using functional MRI, researchers found that two individuals with identical blood alcohol concentrations can exhibit substantially different patterns of brain network disruption—from moderate to severe fragmentation.
Critically, the measured degree of neural fragmentation correlated more strongly with subjective intoxication than BAC levels alone. This finding underscores that individual neurobiological vulnerability to alcohol is measurable and quantifiable through advanced imaging techniques.
The research suggests that some people possess brain networks more resilient to alcohol’s disruptive effects, while others show pronounced neural reorganization at equivalent BAC levels. These objective neural markers may eventually support more accurate individual assessments of alcohol-induced impairment.
