A landmark analysis published in Nature Medicine has provided the most comprehensive regional assessment to date of cancer cases and deaths attributable to modifiable risk factors including tobacco, alcohol, obesity, and dietary patterns. The study, led by international researchers, moves beyond identifying isolated risk factors to quantifying the actual proportion of preventable cancer burden across diverse health systems worldwide.

This evidence-based framework enables health policymakers and cancer control programmes to strategically allocate prevention resources according to region-specific patterns. By understanding which modifiable exposures drive cancer incidence in different populations, public health systems can design targeted interventions that address local risk profiles. The findings underscore that cancer prevention represents a critical investment opportunity across all income levels, with potential for substantial mortality reduction through evidence-informed policy and behaviour change initiatives.
