A rigorous 2006 randomized controlled trial challenged prevailing safety concerns by administering creatine at exceptionally high doses to vulnerable pediatric patients. Researchers gave 39 children aged 1 to 14 years with severe traumatic brain injuries 28 grams of creatine daily for six months—approximately five times the amount used by adult athletes. The striking finding: no clinically significant adverse events were reported, and treatment groups demonstrated measurable improvements in cognitive and functional recovery compared to controls. This outcome is particularly significant given the young age of participants, including infants, and the severity of their neurological injuries. The trial’s robust safety profile has been corroborated by subsequent pediatric studies across multiple conditions, yet regulatory agencies in numerous countries continue to restrict creatine sales to minors—a policy increasingly questioned by sports nutrition experts.
