Diagram of GSK-3β enzyme with magnesium and lithium substitution mechanism
An enzyme called GSK-3β accelerates cellular aging in the brain and is overactive in Alzheimer's disease. Lithium, chemically similar to magnesium, can displace magnesium at the enzyme's active site and slow its activity. Epidemiological research suggests trace-dose lithium (around 1 mg daily) may offer neuroprotective benefits, but human clinical evidence remains limited. — Photo by Shawn Day on Unsplash (Unsplash License)
