A landmark European study has identified a striking sex-based difference in Alzheimer’s disease pathology: women with the condition show a dramatic 38% depletion of protective omega-3 lipids in their blood, while men exhibit no comparable decline. The research, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, suggests that the loss of estrogen after menopause impairs the brain’s ability to synthesize and transport long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), thereby dismantling a biochemical advantage women naturally possess during their reproductive years.
A concurrent meta-analysis of 58 randomized controlled trials identified an optimal dosage range of 1,000–2,500 mg daily of combined EPA and DHA that produced the strongest cognitive benefits—notably in healthy adults rather than those already diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. These findings underscore the potential critical importance of preventive omega-3 intervention in mid-to-older age women. While the study remains observational and cannot yet establish definitive causality, it provides compelling evidence that sex-specific lipid patterns warrant investigation as potential treatment targets and prevention strategies.
