A landmark randomized controlled trial published in Nature Medicine demonstrates that daily multivitamin supplementation may offer measurable protection against age-related biological changes. Researchers analyzing data from the COSMOS trial found that multivitamin use delayed cognitive aging by approximately two years compared to placebo across 5,203 participants followed over two years.
Beyond cognitive benefits, the study revealed that multivitamin supplementation slowed two of five epigenetic aging clocks—molecular markers that track biological aging at the DNA level. The effects were most pronounced in individuals who exhibited faster biological aging at baseline, suggesting that micronutrient intervention may be particularly beneficial for this population.
These findings represent an important step in understanding how nutritional interventions can modulate aging pathways. The consistency of cognitive benefits across multiple independent COSMOS substudies strengthens the evidence base for protective effects on age-related cognitive decline.
