A landmark clinical trial has validated bepirovirsen, an innovative antisense oligonucleotide therapy, as a powerful addition to hepatitis B treatment protocols. When combined with standard antiviral therapy, the experimental drug achieved undetectable viral loads in 96% of patients over a 48-week study period, significantly outperforming conventional monotherapy approaches.
The drug works by targeting hepatitis B virus RNA directly, preventing viral protein synthesis and reducing hepatic viral burden. Led by Dr. Thomas Berg at Leipzig University Medical Center, the multicenter European trial enrolled 120 patients and demonstrated both efficacy and tolerability, with injection-site reactions occurring in 23% of recipients at mostly mild-to-moderate severity.
Phase III trials are expected to commence in 2024, with potential regulatory approval and clinical availability anticipated by 2027. This advancement represents a significant step toward functional cure strategies in chronic hepatitis B management. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
