New Data Reveals Scope of Chemo Brain and Promise of Exercise Intervention

Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment remains a substantial but underrecognized challenge in cancer care. Clinical trial data now confirms that 80% of patients undergoing chemotherapy experience measurable cognitive decline, commonly referred to as “chemo brain.” This widespread phenomenon can manifest as difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and mental fog that persists long after treatment completion. However, recent research offers a practical solution. A randomized controlled trial demonstrates that structured home exercise programs significantly reduce these cognitive symptoms, with participants showing marked improvements in attention and overall mental clarity. The effectiveness of physical activity exceeded that of low-dose ibuprofen, suggesting that exercise should be considered a primary intervention strategy. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating exercise prescriptions into comprehensive cancer care protocols to protect cognitive function during treatment.
