The UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council has disclosed a significant regulatory failure spanning 12 years, during which the organization systematically failed to properly screen criminal records and character issues for nurses and midwives. This oversight potentially allowed practitioners with serious criminal backgrounds to remain registered and continue treating patients.
The admission has prompted swift action, with more than a dozen nursing professionals now facing potential removal from the register. The Royal College of Nursing characterized the failure as “astounding” and has called for an independent investigation into how such extensive lapses in vetting processes remained undetected for over a decade.
Under NMC regulations, healthcare professionals must declare character issues and criminal records that could affect their ability to practice safely. The systematic failure of these mandatory reviews raises critical questions about patient protection mechanisms within the UK’s healthcare system and public confidence in nursing regulation.
