The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and regional partners have launched coordinated efforts to enhance surveillance systems for hantavirus and other hemorrhagic fevers throughout the Americas, according to an announcement issued June 12, 2026. The initiative aims to improve detection, monitoring, and rapid response capabilities across the region.
Hemorrhagic fever outbreaks, including hantavirus infections, pose significant public health risks in the Americas. These zoonotic diseases are transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents and can result in severe illness. Enhanced surveillance is critical for early identification of cases and prevention of wider transmission in affected populations.
PAHO is coordinating with national health authorities and international partners to strengthen laboratory capacity, epidemiological tracking, and information sharing protocols. Healthcare providers have been advised to maintain heightened awareness for suspected cases. This is a developing story.
