A groundbreaking validation study from Bangladesh demonstrates that mobile phone technology can effectively capture pregnancy histories and perinatal mortality data in rural communities, addressing a critical gap in global maternal health monitoring.

Researchers found that phone-administered interviews achieved 88% response completeness and 82% data accuracy when measuring pregnancy outcomes, while reducing costs by 65% compared to traditional in-person surveys. This innovation is particularly significant for regions where vital registration systems are weak or absent, leaving maternal and newborn deaths largely undocumented.

The study, published in Tropical Medicine & International Health, validates a practical, scalable approach to measuring perinatal mortality—one of the most underreported metrics in global health. By leveraging existing mobile infrastructure, this method offers hope for improving maternal health surveillance across low-income countries and strengthening efforts to meet international health targets.
