New research quantifies the mineral interaction effect that many supplement users remain unaware of. A controlled study demonstrates that 50mg daily zinc supplementation—the typical dose in immune support formulations—reduces erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity by 47% within just 10 weeks of consistent use.

The depletion mechanism operates through metallothionein protein synthesis in intestinal cells, which traps copper and prevents its absorption. Most concerning is that serum ceruloplasmin and other standard copper blood tests show no abnormalities, creating a false sense of safety. This diagnostic blind spot means individuals supplementing with zinc at recommended doses may experience functional copper deficiency without clinical awareness.

The research underscores the importance of understanding mineral interactions in supplement protocols and the limitations of conventional biomarkers.
