A striking clinical reality emerges from observational data: necrotising fasciitis mortality rates scale dramatically with diagnostic delay. Patients diagnosed and surgically treated within 24 hours experience approximately 15% mortality, while those diagnosed between 24–48 hours face 25% mortality risk. Most alarming, delayed diagnosis beyond 48 hours correlates with 40% mortality—nearly three times higher than early intervention.

This mortality gradient underscores why clinical vigilance is non-negotiable. The hallmark presentation—disproportionate pain coupled with rapid progressive skin changes (erythema, blistering, crepitus, necrosis)—demands immediate emergency assessment. Every hour of delayed recognition directly impacts patient survival.

These data reflect the infection’s aggressive nature: polymicrobial pathogens rapidly destroy tissue planes, overwhelming host defenses. Broad-spectrum antibiotics alone cannot stop the progression; surgical debridement within hours of recognition is the only intervention proven to substantially alter this lethal trajectory.
