By age 63, the aerobic fitness gap between the most active and least active individuals in a Swedish cohort was staggering—and remarkably, baseline fitness at age 16 did not predict this outcome. This finding, from a 47-year longitudinal study of 427 adults published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, challenges the assumption that genetic predisposition or early fitness establishes a fixed trajectory. Instead, the research reveals that accumulated activity decisions across decades are the dominant force shaping fitness in later life. The most active individuals maintained approximately 85 percent of their peak aerobic capacity by age 63, while the least active declined to roughly 45 percent of their baseline. The divergence accelerated dramatically after age 50, suggesting that maintaining consistent physical activity becomes increasingly protective against age-related decline in older adulthood.
