Diagram of nervous system architecture showing trigeminal pathways, sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, and neurotransmitter systems
The nervous system operates through three integrated levels: sensory pathways (trigeminal nerve), autonomic control (sympathetic and parasympathetic balance), and neurotransmitter signalling (dopamine, serotonin, GABA). Understanding this architecture is essential for recognizing how physical and emotional symptoms arise. — Photo by Aakash Dhage on Unsplash (Unsplash License)

Your nervous system operates like a sophisticated biological switch, continuously alternating between two fundamental modes that govern your physical and mental state. The sympathetic nervous system activates your “fight-or-flight” response during stress, elevating heart rate and redirecting blood flow to muscles. Conversely, the parasympathetic system engages your “rest-and-digest” mode, promoting recovery and metabolic balance. This dynamic interplay explains the profound interconnections between psychological stress and physical health—why chronic anxiety disrupts digestion, why poor sleep impairs mood regulation, and why understanding these pathways is essential for managing overall wellbeing. Behind every mood shift, sensation, and bodily function lies a cascade of neurotransmitters including dopamine, serotonin, and GABA, firing across billions of neural connections. When this delicate chemical balance is disrupted, neuropsychiatric disorders can emerge. Recognizing your nervous system’s wiring empowers informed decisions about stress management and mental health. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
