New research reveals that discontinuation of GLP-1 receptor agonists may not signal permanent treatment abandonment. A substantial majority of patients who stop medications like Ozempic eventually restart therapy, challenging conventional assumptions about medication persistence in type 2 diabetes management.

Gastrointestinal side effects—including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea—remain the primary driver of initial discontinuation, affecting 92% of patients who stop treatment. However, emerging evidence suggests that side effect resolution and dose adjustments encourage many patients to resume therapy. Notably, newer GLP-1 formulations demonstrate improved persistence rates compared to older agents, offering clinicians optimism about sustained glycemic control.
