A comprehensive US trial has identified three critical findings regarding restaurant menu warning labels that warrant attention from healthcare practitioners and policymakers. First, the intervention demonstrated substantial efficacy, with warning labels reducing added sugar orders by 31% compared to standard menus, suggesting a powerful mechanism for population-level dietary improvement.

Second, label design matters considerably. Icon-based warnings outperformed text-only approaches, achieving 35% versus 28% reductions respectively, indicating that visual communication enhances behavioral response. Third, and importantly for stakeholder adoption, the intervention produced no negative effects on customer satisfaction or restaurant revenue, eliminating major implementation barriers.

These findings position menu warning labels as a practical, evidence-based policy tool that could meaningfully reduce sugar consumption without compromising business viability or consumer experience. Healthcare providers can cite this research when advocating for menu labeling policies at institutional and regulatory levels.
