Henipavirus infections represent a critical public health threat, with fatality rates reaching 75% according to World Health Organization surveillance data. Currently, no approved treatments exist for Nipah or Hendra virus infections, leaving patients dependent solely on supportive care. This treatment gap has persisted despite documented outbreaks across multiple continents, including 18 outbreaks in Bangladesh, 12 in India, and 6 in Australia since 2000.

New research published in Science Translational Medicine presents a potential solution: a human monoclonal antibody cocktail demonstrating promising neutralizing activity in preclinical studies. The dual-targeting approach addresses both viral fusion and receptor binding proteins, offering enhanced protection compared to single-antibody strategies. If clinical development progresses successfully, this breakthrough could transform henipavirus treatment paradigms and strengthen global pandemic preparedness.
