First, current AI applications lack rigorous evidence of developmental benefit—clinical trials measuring real cognitive and developmental outcomes are virtually nonexistent, despite widespread pediatric use.
Second, a new framework is needed. Rather than relying on engagement metrics that prioritize screen time and user retention, pediatric AI tools should be evaluated and prescribed similarly to medications, with clear dosing guidelines, specific clinical indications, and evidence-based protocols. This prescription-style approach would establish clinical oversight standards comparable to other pediatric interventions.
Third, the focus must shift from commercial viability to developmental validity. Healthcare providers should prioritize tools designed around documented child development principles rather than those optimized for user engagement.
