Health journalism carries particular responsibility because the words we use shape how people understand diseases, populations, and interventions.
Person-First Language
We write “people with diabetes” not “diabetics,” “people living with HIV” not “HIV patients.” We respect community preferences for identity-first language when documented.
Stigma-Free Reporting
- We use “substance use disorder” not “drug abuse”
- We use “died by suicide” not “committed suicide”
- We do not describe diseases as belonging to ethnic or national groups
- We avoid “miracle cure” or “breakthrough” unless quoting a verified source
Health Equity
We acknowledge health disparities without reinforcing stereotypes. We include diverse perspectives, particularly from communities most affected.
Geographic Sensitivity
As a Georgian publication with global readership, we use country names over regional generalisations, specify study populations, and note generalisability limitations.
