პროცესი, რომლის დროსაც სხვადასხვა ეთნიკური ჯგუფისა და რასის წარმომადგენლები ურთიერთობენ დაბრკოლებების გარეშე უფრო მრავალრიცხოვანი საზოგადოების ცხოვრების ფარგლებში. სადაც არ უნდა ცხოვრობდნენ ერთად სხვადასხვა რასობრივი და კულტურული ჯგუფის წარმომადგენლები, სუბორდინაციული (ჩამოსული) სტატუსის მქონე პირები განიცდიან ასიმილაციას. სრული ასიმილაცია იქნებოდა თუ არ დარჩებოდა არცერთი რასობრივ ან ეთნიკურ კონცეფციაზე დაფუძნებული ცალკეული სოციალური სტრუქტურა. ასიმილაცია შესაძლებელია განვასხვაოთ აკომოდაციისა (ტოლერანტობისთვის დამახასიათებელი კომპრომისის პროცესი) და აკულტურაციისგან. იხ. აკულტურაცია.
