The Pan American Health Organization has issued comprehensive guidelines to strengthen measles surveillance and vaccination programmes across the 2026 FIFA World Cup host countries—the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The urgent recommendations address growing concerns about disease transmission during mass international gatherings, where millions of visitors with varying vaccination histories will converge.

PAHO Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa emphasized the organization’s commitment to preventing vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks during the tournament. The guidance focuses on enhancing real-time reporting systems, rapid response capabilities, and vaccination verification protocols. Global health experts recognize major sporting events as potential amplification points for infectious disease spread, making proactive surveillance infrastructure critical for protecting public health during this high-profile international event.
