A new oral formulation of a GLP-1 receptor agonist has demonstrated promising results in clinical trials, potentially transforming obesity treatment by eliminating the need for injections. Aleniglipron achieved up to 11.3% body weight reduction in a randomized controlled trial of 230 adults with overweight or obesity over 36 weeks.

The development represents a significant advance in addressing patient preferences and improving medication adherence. Injectable GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide and liraglutide have shown remarkable efficacy but face adoption barriers due to dosing complexity. An oral alternative could expand access to effective obesity therapy and improve long-term compliance among patients who prefer pill-based medications.

The phase 2b trial results, published in Nature Medicine, provide strong evidence supporting the drug’s safety and effectiveness. These findings set the stage for larger phase 3 trials to confirm efficacy and determine optimal dosing strategies for broader clinical use.
