Landmark Study Reveals Significant Health Risks Associated with Coeliac Disease

A comprehensive analysis of over 60,000 patients has unveiled concerning health disparities for individuals with coeliac disease, according to research published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas. The study, conducted by researchers from Columbia University and Karolinska Institute, tracked patients for an average of 10.5 years and identified substantially elevated mortality and disease risks.

Coeliac disease patients demonstrated a 39% increased risk of death compared to matched controls from the general population, alongside a 27% elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. Most notably, these patients face a 2.38-fold increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Dermatitis herpetiformis patients showed even higher mortality risk at 41%. The findings underscore the critical need for comprehensive medical surveillance and follow-up care in this patient population.
