A landmark UK population-based study involving 6,103 patients has provided compelling real-world evidence supporting semaglutide’s effectiveness over dulaglutide for type 2 diabetes management. Conducted by researchers at the University of Surrey using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, the study tracked outcomes between 2018 and 2022, representing one of the largest head-to-head comparisons of these GLP-1 receptor agonists in routine clinical practice.
Patients receiving weekly semaglutide achieved superior blood sugar control, with 0.20% greater HbA1c reduction compared to dulaglutide over 12 months. Additionally, semaglutide users experienced 2.06 kg of additional weight loss and a 1.12 mmHg greater reduction in systolic blood pressure. Notably, both medications demonstrated comparable safety profiles.
A critical finding is that semaglutide’s benefits were consistent across both trial-eligible patients and those typically excluded from randomized controlled trials, suggesting genuine effectiveness in diverse patient populations. This real-world validation bridges the gap between clinical trial results and everyday practice.
