Biobanks worldwide are fundamentally reimagining how researchers access sensitive health data. According to a new perspective in Nature Medicine, trusted research environments (TREs) are becoming the gold standard for balancing scientific discovery with patient privacy protection. These specialized computing platforms allow researchers to analyze large-scale datasets without data leaving secure servers, addressing critical compliance requirements under GDPR and HIPAA.
While security benefits are driving adoption, the transition presents operational challenges. Traditional download models still dominate among major biobanks at 78%, with only 23% exclusively using TRE-only access. Researchers face increased costs and technical barriers, particularly smaller teams lacking dedicated bioinformatics support. To bridge this gap, biobanks are developing accessible tools—such as Phenofhy, a Python-based platform designed for the Our Future Health biobank targeting 10 million UK participants.
