Healthcare stakeholders must address three interconnected system challenges identified in May 2026 reader feedback. First, healthcare worker shortages are creating systemic vulnerabilities across emergency, mental health, and primary care settings. These staffing deficits directly compromise patient safety and care quality, requiring comprehensive workforce development strategies and retention initiatives.

Second, mental health service gaps represent a critical access problem, with providers documenting inadequate resources for both outpatient and crisis services. Suicide prevention program insufficiencies compound this challenge, necessitating immediate investment in evidence-based prevention infrastructure.

Third, public safety coordination represents an underrecognized healthcare system need. Drugged driving prevention and law enforcement collaboration with healthcare providers require formal protocols and resource allocation.

Policymakers and health system leaders should prioritize these three domains simultaneously to restore system capacity and improve patient outcomes.
