Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have successfully completed the first human safety trial of a novel vaccine targeting both Lassa fever and rabies virus. The phase 1 study, published in Nature Medicine, demonstrated that the vaccine candidate is well-tolerated and capable of generating immune responses against both pathogens without significant adverse events.

Lassa fever remains a critical public health threat in West Africa, where annual cases range from 100,000 to 300,000 individuals. The absence of any licensed vaccine for this hemorrhagic fever represents a substantial gap in global vaccine coverage, particularly given the disease’s high mortality rate and endemicity in resource-limited regions. This dual-platform approach offers potential advantages by addressing two serious viral threats through a single immunization strategy, potentially improving vaccination coverage and public health outcomes in affected populations.
