The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has cleared the first oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist tablet for weight loss, marking a significant advancement in obesity treatment options. The tablet formulation of semaglutide, marketed as Wegovy by Novo Nordisk, provides patients with an alternative to weekly subcutaneous injections previously required for weight management.
This regulatory approval builds on Novo Nordisk’s established safety profile with oral semaglutide, which has been available in the UK market for type 2 diabetes management under the brand name Rybelsus. While the MHRA approval represents an important step forward, patient access through the NHS will require evaluation by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which assesses cost-effectiveness and clinical value.
The approval reflects growing clinical evidence supporting GLP-1 receptor agonists as effective obesity treatments, expanding therapeutic options beyond injectable formulations for eligible patients.
