The US Food and Drug Administration has issued a comprehensive safety communication regarding Boston Scientific’s Accolade pacemaker devices, warning of potential premature battery depletion that may necessitate earlier-than-expected device replacement. The alert highlights a specific technical failure mechanism affecting battery longevity in certain Accolade models, which may not be detected through standard device interrogation intervals.

According to the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, this accelerated discharge pattern poses a significant clinical risk, potentially resulting in sudden loss of pacing support if undetected. In response, healthcare providers are advised to implement enhanced surveillance protocols, including more frequent device interrogations and direct patient communication strategies.

Boston Scientific has collaborated with FDA regulators to characterize the failure mode and develop comprehensive monitoring protocols. Clinicians managing patients with affected devices should immediately establish enhanced monitoring schedules to detect early signs of battery depletion and determine appropriate replacement timing.
