The World Meteorological Organization has issued an urgent warning that El Niño conditions will persist through August 2024, driving above-average temperatures and heightening risks of heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires across multiple regions worldwide. This climate phenomenon poses significant public health challenges, particularly for vulnerable populations already experiencing extreme weather events. Health systems globally are being urged to strengthen their emergency preparedness protocols to address the anticipated surge in heat-related illnesses and climate-related health emergencies. The WMO forecasts indicate that El Niño’s disruption of global weather patterns will continue amplifying health risks associated with extreme heat, including increased cardiovascular and respiratory hospitalizations. Medical professionals and public health officials must coordinate comprehensive strategies to protect at-risk communities during the intensifying climate crisis ahead.
