According to the International Organization for Migration’s latest estimates, 281 million international migrants worldwide navigate complex healthcare systems with limited access and support. This substantial population faces documented barriers to healthcare in many destination countries, creating urgent public health concerns that require coordinated global attention.
To address these challenges, IOM has structured its 2026 calendar around 15 major international observances designed to amplify advocacy efforts and policy coordination. The strategic sequencing of events—from World Health Day in April through World Mental Health Day in October—creates sustained momentum for health system strengthening and migrant-centered interventions. Recent WHO data and UNHCR research demonstrate that displaced and mobile populations experience higher rates of mental health conditions, underscoring the necessity of this coordinated approach to migration health challenges.
