A new environmental monitoring study has documented a troubling reality: per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) continue contaminating indoor air in ski wax preparation rooms years after regulatory bans on fluorinated waxes took effect. These persistent organic compounds, commonly referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their resistance to natural degradation, pose significant health risks to workers and athletes in affected facilities.
The research, conducted across multiple countries with established ski industries, reveals that international regulatory efforts have failed to eliminate existing PFAS contamination. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified PFAS as emerging contaminants of concern due to their environmental persistence and documented health effects. These findings underscore a critical gap between policy implementation and actual contamination control, highlighting the need for more effective remediation strategies and occupational health protections.
