The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has unveiled comprehensive avian influenza surveillance guidelines designed to harmonise H5N1 monitoring across all 27 EU member states. The unified framework establishes standardised laboratory confirmation criteria and mandatory real-time data sharing protocols, enabling rapid identification and reporting of confirmed cases through the ECDC’s Early Warning and Response System (EWRS).

By consolidating detection procedures and eliminating diagnostic variation, the guidelines strengthen early-warning capabilities and facilitate coordinated public health response within hours of laboratory confirmation. The surveillance system monitors H5N1 circulation in wild bird populations, poultry holdings, and high-risk animal groups to identify potential zoonotic spillover risks before human transmission occurs. This integrated approach represents a significant advancement in European pandemic preparedness and cross-border disease prevention infrastructure.
