New research reveals three critical insights that should reshape how clinicians approach nasal spray prescribing in women. First, drug delivery to the brain fluctuates meaningfully across menstrual cycle phases—a variation that remains invisible when clinical trials average results across all subjects. Second, standard dosing regimens may deliver suboptimal or excessive doses depending on cycle phase, potentially compromising therapeutic efficacy or increasing adverse effects for specific patients.

Third, and most importantly, clinical trials must prioritize sex-stratified pharmacokinetic data collection to inform personalized dosing strategies. These findings suggest that precision medicine in women’s health requires moving beyond one-size-fits-all approaches toward cycle-informed treatment protocols. Healthcare providers should consider cycle phase when prescribing nasal medications, while regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical companies must prioritize gathering pharmacokinetic data disaggregated by sex and menstrual cycle status.
