Preparing the Body Before Surgery: How Prehabilitation Transforms Spinal Fusion Outcomes

A landmark randomized controlled trial reveals that structured preoperative exercise programs—termed prehabilitation—deliver significant improvements in recovery outcomes for older adults undergoing spinal fusion surgery. The research demonstrates that preparing the body through targeted conditioning in the weeks before surgery can be as impactful as the surgical procedure itself.

The trial involved elderly patients aged 65 and older scheduled for spinal fusion procedures. Those who completed structured 6-8 week prehabilitation programs showed measurable benefits including faster functional recovery, reduced postoperative complications, and shorter hospital stays compared to standard preoperative care. The findings suggest that physical conditioning addresses the physiological vulnerabilities that often complicate recovery in aging populations.

As spinal fusion procedures become increasingly common among older adults, these results point toward a paradigm shift in surgical preparation. Rather than viewing surgery as an isolated event, the evidence supports integrated perioperative care that strengthens patients before they enter the operating room.
