A preclinical investigation into a novel biomaterial reveals a multifaceted approach to treating severe periodontitis. The composite combines three active components: jackfruit latex provides structural biocompatibility, pomegranate peel extract delivers antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, and simvastatin—an established pharmaceutical agent—contributes additional anti-inflammatory properties. Laboratory evidence indicates this combination effectively suppresses bacterial infection while reducing tissue inflammation.

The research addresses a critical gap in periodontitis management: current therapies typically target infection or inflammation separately, rarely addressing bone and tissue regeneration. Early preclinical data suggest this material may support regeneration of alveolar bone and periodontal tissues lost to advanced disease. However, patients and clinicians should understand that this research remains preclinical. Human clinical trials have not yet commenced, and substantial additional evidence will be required to establish safety, efficacy, and optimal dosing before this material enters standard dental practice.
