A new randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in Nutrition and Cancer reveals that vitamin D3 supplementation may significantly enhance chemotherapy response in postmenopausal women with breast cancer. During a 6-month course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, women receiving 2,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 achieved a 43% pathological complete response rate—nearly double the 24% rate observed in the placebo group.
The findings underscore the role of modifiable nutritional factors in cancer treatment outcomes. Notably, baseline vitamin D deficiency was prevalent in both groups, with mean levels of 19.6–21 ng/mL, suggesting that a substantial portion of the breast cancer population may benefit from supplementation strategies. These results warrant further investigation into vitamin D status as a potential biomarker for treatment planning and patient stratification in oncology.
