New evidence highlights the staggering metabolic demands placed on the developing and adult brain: energy consumption peaks at 50% of total body expenditure in children around age 10 and remains at 20% throughout adulthood. This energy-intensive organ cannot function without adequate B12, folate, and omega-3 fatty acids, which enable ATP production and maintain myelin integrity for rapid neuronal signaling. Without these micronutrients, neurons cannot generate the chemical energy required for cognitive processing, leading to measurable declines in memory, attention, and executive function. Crucially, research demonstrates that cognitive symptoms stemming from micronutrient deficiency are often reversible when nutritional status is corrected. This finding positions micronutrient assessment as a practical, cost-effective screening tool in clinical practice, particularly for patients presenting with unexplained cognitive decline or mood disturbance.
