First, even a single night under moderate bedroom light (100 lux—equivalent to a hallway nightlight or bedside lamp) disrupts insulin sensitivity and heart rate variability. Second, long-term exposure to bedroom light averaging 5 lux or higher was linked to a 3.74-fold increased diabetes incidence over 42 months in older adults. Third, objective metabolic harm begins at light levels most people consider acceptably dark.
These findings suggest that current bedroom lighting practices may exceed safe thresholds for metabolic health. Sleep environment optimization—through blackout measures, light reduction, and awareness of cumulative exposure—should be considered part of evidence-based diabetes prevention and cardiometabolic health strategy.
