New data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 reveals stark disparities in infectious disease burden across age groups in China. Respiratory tract infections represent the leading infectious disease threat for adults aged 65 and older, generating 2,840 DALYs per 100,000 population—significantly higher than other major infectious disease categories. This concentration among elderly populations contrasts sharply with China’s overall 50% reduction in infectious disease burden since 2000. While the nation achieved substantial progress in controlling infectious diseases nationally, the absolute burden among older adults has remained persistently high, creating new epidemiological challenges. Other significant infectious disease burdens include enteric infections affecting all ages (1,450 DALYs per 100,000), tuberculosis in working-age adults (1,220 DALYs per 100,000), and hepatitis B across all demographics (1,030 DALYs per 100,000). These statistics highlight the shifting nature of China’s infectious disease landscape and the urgent need for gerontology-focused public health strategies. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
