The World Health Organization has declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has crossed into Uganda. As of May 31, 2026, authorities report approximately 900 confirmed cases concentrated in eastern DRC with documented transmission into Uganda, marking a significant regional escalation.

The outbreak’s spread across the DRC-Uganda border presents enhanced transmission risks typical of cross-border regions, where population movement and limited healthcare infrastructure may facilitate disease propagation. The case count of 900+ indicates substantial outbreak magnitude, though specific case distribution between the two countries remains unclear from current reports.

Health authorities have activated emergency response protocols, though detailed information on contact tracing effectiveness, case fatality rates, and vaccination campaign status is currently unavailable. International health agencies are coordinating containment measures in affected border regions. This is a developing story.
