A stark financial reality now defines the gene therapy landscape: treatment costs reaching $2 million per patient represent a watershed moment for healthcare economics. This unprecedented price point—far exceeding traditional oncology treatments at $50,000 and annual specialty drugs at $150,000—has created an acute financing crisis within healthcare systems globally.

Health economist William Padula’s analysis reveals that this cost explosion is not merely a pricing problem but a fundamental infrastructure deficit. Payment systems designed for distributed, recurring costs cannot accommodate massive single-intervention investments, even when those interventions provide permanent cures.

The financial barrier threatens to create a two-tiered access system where gene therapies remain available only to wealthy nations and well-insured populations. Healthcare stakeholders must urgently develop scalable financing models capable of managing these extraordinary costs while maintaining treatment accessibility.
