How Climate Change Affects Your Health: Why AMR Surveillance Must Evolve

Healthcare professionals and public health authorities must recognize that antimicrobial resistance cannot be addressed in isolation from climate considerations. A new longitudinal study demonstrates that warming temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns directly drive the spread of resistance genes in Salmonella—a pathogen affecting millions globally.

The practical implications are clear: antimicrobial resistance surveillance systems must incorporate climate data to accurately predict and prevent outbreaks. Current surveillance approaches that ignore climate variables may fail to identify emerging resistance threats early enough to implement effective interventions. Public health programmes must adopt integrated strategies that simultaneously address antimicrobial stewardship and climate resilience.

As high-emission climate scenarios project escalating antimicrobial resistance risks, the evidence demands action from healthcare systems, policymakers, and researchers to establish comprehensive surveillance frameworks that recognize the climate-resistance connection.
