Sweden reports more than 6,000 melanoma diagnoses each year, yet treatment outcomes vary dramatically among patients with seemingly similar disease characteristics. A new doctoral thesis from Karolinska Institutet addresses this critical gap by identifying tumor tissue markers capable of predicting which patients will experience poor treatment responses.
Conventional prognostic tools rely primarily on tumor thickness and staging—metrics that fail to capture the complex molecular biology underlying melanoma. The research reveals that biomarkers within the tumor microenvironment provide essential prognostic information absent from traditional assessments, potentially enabling clinicians to identify high-risk patients requiring more aggressive intervention.
These findings highlight the urgent need for improved risk stratification methods in melanoma care. By incorporating molecular biomarker analysis, oncologists may achieve better treatment matching and improved patient outcomes across the expanding population of Swedish melanoma patients.
