Researchers at Imperial College London have unveiled a transformative approach to prosthetic foot assessment that requires only basic photography equipment and trained observers. The grid-based visual scoring system addresses a critical gap in global prosthetic care, where sophisticated laboratory testing remains inaccessible in resource-limited settings.

Testing 62 prosthetic feet from Sri Lanka using a 20×10 grid overlay, the research team achieved inter-observer reliability scores of 0.88 with three independent raters. This validates the method’s effectiveness for systematic, objective wear assessment without expensive equipment.

The breakthrough demonstrates strong potential for improving device monitoring and maintenance protocols across developing healthcare systems. By democratizing prosthetic assessment technology, this innovation could enhance patient outcomes and prosthetic device longevity in underserved populations worldwide.
